Critical Portage Service needs more support

July 11, 2019 12:58 PM

Liberal Democrat Group leader, Ed Maxfield will raise the critical issue of the Children Services Portage Service at Norfolk County Council's Cabinet meeting on Monday.

The Portage service is a home-visiting educational service for pre-school children with SEND and their families. It works with families in one to one settings, to help them develop a quality of life and experience, for themselves and their young children, in which they can learn together, play together, participate and be included in their community in their own right.

Ed Maxfield says, "All Children should have the same opportunities irrespective of privilege. Yet Norfolk Portage Service has seen no increase in its budget for almost a decade and in that time the number of families supported by the service has increased almost three-fold."

It is a vital service for children with disabilities and additional needs. It should be adequately funded. Every child deserves a chance in life."

"We agree with the Council's webpage for the Portage service that states that 'We believe that all children have the right to be happy, healthy and safe; to be loved, valued and respected and to have high aspirations for their future, no matter what their diagnosis or need."

"But that can't be done on the cheap."
