Norfolk Liberal Democrats shocked that a call to discuss a People’s Vote has been stopped

July 12, 2019 2:49 PM

Conservative-run Norfolk County Council has blocked a move to debate a People's Vote on Brexit at its next full council meeting.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Steff Aquarone was planning to move the motion but the Council has banned it from being debated.

Councillor Aquarone says,

"I am shocked at this blatant piece of attempted democratic suppression. The chairman's role is supposed to be neutral, and yet this stinks of party political interference. Their once-grand party is in absolute disarray, brought to the brink of extinction by a party that's only been in existence for a few months. They'll do whatever they can to get this issue off the table and it's a disgrace.

Many local authorities across the country from Exeter to Newcastle have debated this issue, as it is fundamental to the future of their local area. In November 2018 Norwich City Council unanimously agreed a call for a public vote on Brexit. There is no greater issue than Brexit and its effects at the moment and people have a right to hear where their local politicians stand."
