Liberal Democrats want to get Norfolk Moving

Mobility Hub

The Liberal Democrats want 'travel hubs' created across Norfolk to link villages to major transport routes.

A 'travel hub' is a flexible transport interchange that could be a bus or train station that has more facilities than a bus stop which would allow people to connect by car from their homes to a nearby hub and then get on a fast public transport route to a location further away.

It is an expansion of the Park and Ride concept, brought out to Norfolk's towns so people can travel directly between hubs as well as in and out of the city - and are only driving the first few miles to join the network.

The travel hubs would be supplemented by giving greater support to the County's demand responsive and community car schemes to help them expand and to encourage new ones to be created.

The initiative is being proposed by the Liberal Democrats as part of their manifesto for the elections to Norfolk County Council on 6 May.

Group Leader on Norfolk County Council Steff Aquarone said "Travel hubs have been created across the world. In Cambridgeshire they are creating 'rural travel hubs' and it is time to catch up.

A series of travel hubs across the county will help keep cars off the roads, making travel across Norfolk quicker and easier as well delivering economic growth. It really is a win, win, win."

Locations for the travel hubs would need to be drawn up but it is suggested by the Liberal Democrats that there could be at least one major hub in each district.

Steff Aquarone said "This however is not a one size fits all situation and conversations with parishes and towns will need to be a key part in shaping what could be delivered for each community."

Funding would be available from the County Council's Capital Budget and as has happened elsewhere in the UK there will be opportunities to source government funding for the schemes.
